Cashmores Curse match. Staffs and Worc Canal

Saturday 27th March.

This was my first match with the Cashmores gang in quite a while as I could not fish the Grueller series this year because I was fishing the winter league at Rolfs Lake.
The match was on the Staffs Worc canal on Teddesley road just outside of Penkridge. With 30 people booked in it was a good turnout for a cut match.

Lee and Paul had pegged out from the lock by the crossover bridge and the lock by the boat yard so there was plenty of room.

I drew peg 5 which meant I had a short walk but word was that you wanted to be in the higher numbers  🙁

My match was not very eventful really. Me, Phil and Heinzer could not buy a bite from the far side. We were both catching 1 meter out in from and to the side. Sprucey was catching quite well from the far side however.

I thought I was fishing a grueller match at one point 😀 I finished up not far from last I think but it was good to fish somewhere different. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers TK.

Will add the results when TK publishes them.

I owe Woodmouse 2 mars bars now…
I will pay my debt on the next match. 😀

TK vs TA 2009

Saturday 17th October

Todays match was the annual Harrisons vs Talk Angling Match. This consists of two teams doing battle on a canal in the Midlands. This years venue was to be Pelsall common and wood lane.

The draw was at the Finger Post pub who had kindly agreed to open early to make us breakfasts and have somewhere nice to do the draw. Thanks for the lovely food and hospitality.

While I was still eating my sausage, bacon and cheese sarnie the draw got under way. TK’s crew were to be on even number and TA were on the odds (cock pegs) hehe. Larry from TA drew pegs for us and visa versa. I ended up with peg 18 on the common. For company from my crew I had Sprucey on 16 and Budgie on 14. Lee Woodhouse had drawn peg 13, the peg everyone wanted.

I got to my peg and realised is was one peg away from where I had a drynet from on one of the gruller matches earlier in the year, I drynetted along with eveyone else (except 3 people) I liked the look of the peg and thought it would be good for a few fish.

I went out to a comfy 13m for my punch line and found I had 1 ½ foot of water. I didn’t have a inside shelf as such because it was more like a gentle slope from 1 foot down to 4-5 foot of water. I settled at the deepest for a caster line.

I only had punch and caster with a few pinkies for today and word was the TA cracks were going to be using bloodworm and joker. I stuck to what I knew and had been working down here on practice sessions. With everything set up I had 20 mins to kill and walked down to see Sprucey, Budgie and Mouse.

With the match about to start Lee announced he had forgotten his drink and asked Gem to go and fetch him some water. So off she went to the pub only to find that a farty little bottle cost £1.70. Tight arse Woodhouse was never going to pay that so she went to find the local shops instead. She took a few pics on the way. Gem was not the only Lady there offering support either.

On the all in I cupped in a pot of punch on the 13m line and a pot of punch with a few casters and hemp on the track line. I shipped out to 13m with some bread and only had to wait 20 seconds for a bite, a small roach. I had avoided a drynet so I was happy. Shipping out again I had another right away and was thinking I was in for a nice days fishing. With in 5 minutes I had 3 fish in the net and then the bloodworm and joker cracks either side of me started catching and left me struggling for a bite.

So after the first hour I had started well and found myself struggling to compete with the guys either side of me. I tried my track line and did not have one single bite from it in the whole match. For the rest of the match I switched lines and tried coming further down the far shelf and closer to the far side snaring the odd fish here and there but could not get the fish feeding properly.

I cupped in some more punch in an attempt to get some fish back in my peg but before I could get back out a swan came by and hoovered the lot up lol.

Naughty Swan liked my bread.

The guys either side of me on the B & J were slaughtering me and were regularly catching. The only chance I had was to catch a beastie from the track but the Tench and Bream were being very shy today, not one was caught although there were reports from Henizer who was bank running that people were being broke by some big fish.

With the whistle signalling the all out I knew I would probably be last in my section and thought I had about 8oz and I wasn’t far off with my guess. Sprucey reckoned he had about a lb and Budgie said he would be lucky to have 6oz. Woodhouse on the other hand was like a cheshire cat so we knew he had done well.

I would like to thank both TK and Larry for arranging this superb well run match. I have had a right laugh on the day even if the fishing for me was hard going. I will be fishing this again for sure.
