Jinx Series. Match 1. 15th May 2010.

The day had finally arrived. 25 eager people arrived at Rolfs Lake with big expectations. With big weights coming from the open matches at the lake everyone was keen to get on the peg kings board.

Me and Gem left the house at 9am for the hour and a half drive down to the lake. Gem had positioned the new MINX HAT in the back window of the car so if we passed any JINXSTERS on the motorway they would have a glimpse of the feared HAT! Low and behold the first person the get his peepers on it was Marcus Burgess (Budgie) ๐Ÿ˜€

Arriving at the lake we was greeted by glorious sunshine and a growing number of excited JINXSTERS.ย  After saying the hello’s Steve (Steak) turned up and that could mean only one thing….. The handing over of the new addition to the JINX Series, Gems PINK hat. Anyone getting MINXED will be open to wearing the hat for the next match. Steve had been MINXED by Gem at Lindholme lakes and had kindly agreed to wear the HAT for the first Jinx Match. Whatย  a gentleman ๐Ÿ˜€

After the last match in the series Malc is holding a BBQ at the lake. In order to get some funds for all the food he was running a Guess the winning weight competition. You pay ยฃ1 to have a go. 50p goes towards the food funds and the other 50p goes towards whoever guesses nearest. Gem and Liam went round and collected everyone’s guesses.

People gathering for the Draw

On to the draw. Malc is running the series a little different this year, he is using the normal sections but you will move round the lake this time. So people like Mugger and Clive cannot draw the same pegs all the time ๐Ÿ˜€

I drew peg 26 which is in C section. I drew this peg for the last JINX match last year and won my section off it, also there had been some big weights coming off it in the open matches so I was quite hopeful. For company I had Jon Hatch on my left and Clive Pritchard on my right. Also I was only 2 pegs away from the MINX herself so I could keep a keen eye on her.

Steve. What a Gentleman ๐Ÿ˜€

On to the match. I set up a shallow rig and a Paste line on the bush to my left. Dead simple ๐Ÿ˜€ I also had a 7 meter line as backup. On the all in I fed the bush and fired out some pellets on the 11m shallow line and shipped out. First plop in I missed a bite and second plop in resulted in my first fish. What happened next was HIGHLY embarrassing, The new elastic I was trying out was not up to much to say the least. A fish about 6lb led me on a merry dance around the lake, round the back of my keep nets, in the bush and finally snapping me round the platform leg ๐Ÿ™

With everyone laughing at me and shaking with excitement I mended my rig and wrapped some more elastic on the winder and went out again. Bloody hell the same thing happened again but this time I managed to land the fish which was only about 5lb but it still took over 5 minutes to get in. This topkit was chucked up the bank and I switched to the old trusted Red Hydro. Lesson learnt here… if it ain’t broke don’t fix it AND Stick to what you know.

Shipping out again with a red hydro topkit and the story was very different. Fish hooked and in the net at a less embarrassing manor ๐Ÿ˜€ The shallow line was producing a steady run of fish and I was ahead in the section as far as I could see. I had a go on the paste down by the bush which resulted in a nice 14lb+ carp. I kept swapping from the shallow line to the bush and was slowly building a good bag of fish.

Jon to my left was not having a good day until he switched to the pellet waggler and started picking a few fish up, Clive was switching lines regularly and getting some fish also but the rest of the section were really struggling. In the final 2 hours both Dave Moore and Paul Jay had started picking up some fish too.

Elsewhere on the big lake this is what I could see…

  • Budgie Struggling on peg 19 trying to avoid a MINXING
  • Dave Webbo on peg 14 hooking and loosing fish willy nilly
  • Paul ‘ringer’ Jay getting abuse from Eddie
  • Paul Roberts getting pee’d off with witnessing my weigher’s. Sorry Paul ๐Ÿ˜€
  • Mugger hanging from a tree after having a right Grueller
  • Malc breaking more kit than soft Mick
  • Gem getting her tuition off Eddie
  • Dave the frog having a grueller.

On to the weigh in and it soon became clear just how hard it had fished. Rolfs Lake had done its normal trick on the JINXSTERS.

Sorry about the pictures, Gem ain’t to good on the camera ๐Ÿ˜€

A few JINXSTERS had managed to get on the exclusive PEG KINGS board today too. Gem on peg 29, Geoff on peg 37, Paul on peg 38 and Jon on peg 27. Well done guys and girls.

You can’t ask for a better start to the series but normal service for me will be resumed next match. I normally do well in one match in the JINX series and do crap in the rest of the matches, So I have got my good one out the way early ๐Ÿ˜€

It was Superb to meet up with everyone again. Looking forward to the next match.

One final thing that sticks in my head is a phone conversation with Budgie along the lines of….

me “Gems going to Minx you”

Budgie “It will NEVER happen mate”

MD Fund Raising match at Lindholme Lakes

17th April

all pictures are clickable for a larger view except top picture

This match had been organised in order to raise funds for the running costs of maggotdrowning.com. Neil at Lindholme lakes had generously let us use the lakes free of charge as well as securing some rods for prize’s. All money from the day would go to Dave (red leader) to help pay for the site running costs.

The day started off for me and Gem by me getting up late, 12pm. Gem woke me up with a phone call. I had planned to get all my gear ready and make my rods up but that went out the window. Gem turned up and we proceeded to load the car up. Gem’s 106 is not the biggest car but we got all the gear in quite easily and put the postcode into the sat nav ready for the off.

Google maps had indicated it would be about 2 hours to get there but with numerous delays on the A38 and M1 it was nearer 3 hours. We arrived at the lakes and was greeted by Neils son who kindly helped us unload the gear from the car in to a house that was been used for storage for those not camping. We also met another MD member, Red Baron. He had travelled from Brighton and his journey had taken 4-5 hours ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Me and Gem were leaving our gear at the lake as we had booked in to a hotel for the night, this was before we knew Neil was allowing overnight camping. We had a look round on laterooms.com and had seen a room in the red lion inn in Epworth which was 2 minutes away from the lake. This is how we imagined the room to look like as it was in the pictures on the site. Also included was an en-suite bathroom.

Excited to get in the room

You can only image the disappointment when the lady opened the door to the room and we were greeted by this..

Only 3 t bags and Dust under the bed ๐Ÿ™

The lovely en-suit bathroom lol

Couldnt swing a cat in here

I wasn’t really bothered but Gem was a little upset bless her. After unpacking and having a shower in the en-suit we went for a walk round Epworth and did a bit of shopping.

Getting back we went and had a meal and I have to say it was the best pub food I have ever had. The portions were huge. After the room disappointment the meal more than made up for it. And it should have done too, it was nearly as much as the room ๐Ÿ˜€

Following a good nights sleep we woke up at 7.45. We went and paid for the room and meal and set off for the lakes. We were greeted by a car park full of cars and people. The most I had ever seen for a match. We parked up and joined the queue for the draw. Dave, Malc and Dai were just in front of us.

Me and Gem got to the front and hoped to draw near each other to save unloading the car twice. Gem drew first and pulled out Oasis peg 48 and dipped in and pulled out Oasis peg 44 ๐Ÿ˜€ Bonus only 1 person between us. That person was Worker1 and he was keen to avoid been Minxed off the next peg.

With no rigs made up I just used one of my Rolfs rigs with was a Jon Walker 0.3g margin float, 0-17 line and a size 16 Fox match carp hook. Lacky was Middy battle machine set very slack. A bit extreme but it turned out to be perfect as the fish here were very hard fighting for the size. They were all in perfect condition too.

One of the smaller fish from the swim

I was feeding micro pellets and using dynamite source 6mm hooker pellets. With in 10 seconds I had a fish on and thought I would be in for a busy day but after 5 minutes the bites had dried up and I was struggling for a bite. I changed to corn and manage to tempt a few more before trying meat and catching 3 more. Switching back to pellet saw a few more fish in the net.

Gem was struggling but she could not fish to the far bank and she could not hold her pole that far out. She was fishing down the track but was still managing to catch a few. She let out the mighty shout after netting her first fish. I could hear the bum holes tightening up round the lake lol ๐Ÿ˜€

Gem soon got bored and went for a walk with the camera for an hour. Here are a few of her pictures.

Norm again, Is something going on here ๐Ÿ˜€

With the sound of 2 shotgun blasts signalling the end of the match I felt like I had about 40lb but as the weighing proved I was way out. For once I had gone way over ๐Ÿ˜€ I weighed in 32-12. I thought sneaky Pegasus on the next peg had beaten me but again I was wrong, he weighed in 24-12. My weight was good enough for 2nd in my section. I remember thinking back wishing I had landed the 6lb mirror that I played for 5 minutes before he winked at me and spat the hook ๐Ÿ™

Worker1 was next to be weighed and he looked tense as he was unsure if he had enough to beat Gem on the next Peg. He popped 8-12 on the scales and waited for Gem to bring her fish out, it was going to be VERY close. Gem weighed 7-7 and he let out a big sigh of relief and escaped a next peg MINXING.

The weigh in was soon completed and everyone was waiting on the car park for the presentation. The cafe was open and serving hot pork rolls which were going down a treat. Dave was also serving some beer which was also going down a treat.

Geoff supping on the beer

Each section winner got a Garbolino rod courtesy of Neil. Loony kindly donated his back to be auctioned off and the proceeds going to Dave to help fund the server. Here are some pictures of the winners.

Loony

We had a great time. The fishery and Staff were top notch. Meeting up with everyone was great. Seeing Malc with that mop on his head… no so great ๐Ÿ˜€

The Journey home only took 2 hours and was traffic free. Word is another match is been arranged for next year and we will be putting our names down for sure but will be camping next time ๐Ÿ˜›

Gem managed to MINX 30 people on the day, to say she is chuffed is an understatement.

Results.
